There are only 50 days to go until World Equestrian Games begin. I will be posting some visitor information later, but right now, let’s talk restaurants and Kentucky cuisine. Lexington has pretty much all of the chain restaurants you would be looking for, so if you are not particularly adventurous, you will be covered. But since many will be making a vacation out of the games and are coming from a considerable distance, i.e. west coast, Europe, etc… I thought a discussion of Kentucky cuisine and restaurants in and around Lexington may be in order.

Canadian Olympic show jumping rider Beth Underhill, has withdrawn from contention for the World Equestrian Games due to her partner of two years, the Dutch Warmblood gelding Top Gun, being sold by his owners. Underhill began riding the beautiful grey gelding by Corland in 2008, and have since finished second in the 2008 Canadian Show Jumping Championships held at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show; were members of Canada’s fourth placed team in the 2009 $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament and, this past February in Wellington, FL, were members of the victorious Canadian team in the CN Nations’ Cup. Less than one week before receiving the news that the horse was to be sold, Underhill guided Top Gun to victory in the $35,000 1.50m Kinnear Financial Cup in the international ring at the Spruce Meadows “North American” Tournament in Calgary, AB.

There has been considerable controversy over the price of tickets, trade show booths, hotels rooms, parking, etc… in the past several months as many “horse people” are being priced out of the ability to attend the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY this fall. There is a thread over on The Chronicle of the Horse’s forum entitled “World Extortion Games”. Are people exaggerating or are things really that bad. You be the judge.
Below is a letter that was copied into the above post on the Chronicle forum which originated on the Facebook page of Warmbloods Today Magazine:

The Canadian show-jumping phenomenon won the Rolex Grand Prix at Aachen on Sunday with his wonderful stallion, Hickstead. This is the latest in a string of victories for Eric that included winning the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup on July 10 at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, AB. Incredibly, this latest victory was achieved even though Eric broke his left foot during the first round at Aachen.
Lamaze said he heard a crack and felt pain upon landing after the ‘c’ element of the triple combination. Lamaze and his Olympic gold medal partner, Hickstead, went on to complete two clean rounds before advancing to the jump-off where they again jumped clear in the fastest time to win the €350,000 Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen over Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer.
